Rethymno stay in Crete

6+1 reasons why to choose Rethymno for your holiday

Where to stay in Crete?

6+1 reasons why you will like Rethymno

Choose the heart of Crete as base of your vacation and be one of the lucky ones who can reach many of the island’s attractions very easy.

You will probably realise how difficult is to decide where to stay in Crete when you realise that this island is not that small as you expected.

You’re just looking at the map and having no idea where to stay and finally you end up with an accommodation like a surprise packet. Cross your fingers and let’s hope that it’s situated in a nice area? Or better to be more conscious and choose the right place from the beginning.

Old town Rethymno
The colourful city of Rethymno with its venetian narrow streets

Here I’ve already mentioned to you some of my ideas how to decide where to stay in Crete however now I’ll give you some of my reasons why my favourite town, Rethymno may be a good choice for you, too.

6 + 1 reasons why you will like Rethymno

Rethymno Crete
Charming old town full with flowers

1. You'll get an insight in both sides of the island

If the eastern and also the western part of the island are tempting you Rethymno has the right location for your memorable holiday experience. Rethymno is located in the middle of the northern part of the island. You can not just to explore both sides of Crete but even deep your feet on the nearby southern shores.

Preveli excursion Crete
Just a short drive from Rethymno you can visit the Preveli Palm forest, as well

2. You'll spend your holiday near the 12 km long
sandy beach

Well, don’t imagine the sandy beach like the Maldives. Rethymno’s coast is partly sandy and partly pebbled but there is really no reason to complain if you can explore the best sunbathing and swimming opportunities in a 12 km long beach just one step from your accommodation.

3. You'll walk in a charming venetian old town in the evenings

Several cultures at once. It’s not enough that you’re in Greece but walking in the streets of Rethymno you’ll feel like you’re in Italy. The flowery balconies of the small old town are tempting you to take photos while you’re getting lost in an unforgettable Venetian labyrinth. It’s no question that soon or later you’ll realise that you’re in one of the most picturesque city of Crete.

4. You'll fall in love with the romantic venetian port with its lighthouse

Most of the harbours are romantic but if a harbor’s decorated with a lighthouse, with small fishing boats and colourful taverns you can’t avoid Cupid’s arrow and you’ll fall in love at first sight.

5. You'll spend your holiday not in a crowded city but not in a quiet village

Rethymno is the good balance. On the one hand you’ll find here everything what you might need for your holiday on the other hand it’ll not feel like in a big city reached by the mass tourism. If you want, you walk in the modern promenade with bars and palm trees and you think that you are in Miami and if you wish you can have a snack with the locals in an old traditional mezeplace where time has stopped.

Sometimes it feels like in Miami

6. You'll enjoy the endless number of taverns, cafes and souvenirshops

An evening walk through the bazaars is perhaps part of every vacation but imagine the same in a luxury version. In the heart of Rethymno in the narrow streets the local shops are selling real Cretan products instead of the Chinese goods and while you’re lost between the several products and shops, hundreds of taverns and cafes are waiting for you to relax at their tables.

+1. You can smell the history of the island in a Venetian Fortress

You can see the symbol of the city, the famous Fortezza from almost everywhere. It dominates the city as it still should be worried from invaders. If you climb to the castle you’ll be at one of Rethymno’s viewpoints and beside of that you’ll become part of a historical journey.

No doubt, I’m in love with Rethymno but despite of this I believe that everyone who see this city and experience its everyday life will have almost the same feelings.

If you decide to choose Rethymno to stay in Crete meet us there in one our excursions.

We spent a wonderful week in Crete at the end of September. In Edit's website, we found a lot of useful information for planning the holiday. We started emailing from home. She was extremely kind and helpful, we received countless good advice from her and we took part in a memorable Santorini boat tour organized by her office. So we had the opportunity to meet her, as well. I can only recommend everyone who travels to Crete to contact Edit! We are very grateful for her help!

Edit was very kind and helpful! As part of a private trip, we went to Balos with a private boat, which we booked from home, but the captain canceled 5 minutes before departure because the waves were too strong and we couldn't go out. We were very sad, we contacted Edit, she answered in a short time and tried to find another boat, but no one could go out by boat that day. The sailing was rescheduled and promised for the afternoon the next day, Edit also sent us a phone number and encouraged us, it would be even better if we go in the afternoon! We are grateful for it, because the trip went fantastically well. We didn't have any problems! Thank you Edit

We found Edit via Facebook half year before our holiday. Immediately after contact her, she was full of useful information and she was extremely helpful. Her videos helped a lot in choosing routes and destinations. She helped us to make tailor-made private excursions with our unique wishes and she organized our excursions with the help of a prepared and friendly local colleague, George, who was our driver. We had a great time, which we thank to Edit and her assistance. We will return and we will ask again for the help of Edit! Thank you very much for everything, Edit!

The best thing that could have happened to us when we’re planning our vacation to Crete was that we found Edit and the MyCCollage website. We read a lot of useful information on her site, so it was clear that we would choose Rethymno as the base of our vacation. If you find the beach here too wavy, I recommend the beach at the port of Bali, where you can swim safely even with small children 😉 Edit helped us a lot, answered all our questions, and the restaurants and locations she recommended were impeccable😍 We also asked for her help with the airport transfer and everything worked smoothly 🙂 So I can only recommend Edit if you are going to Crete, and thank you again for everything 🙂

I found Edit and MyCCollage on the internet, a few days before our travel to Crete. From the first moment, she helped us in everything: starting from the private transfers from the airport and back, at the organized trips, and she even handled a canceled excursion professionally. We received real and enough informations about the excursions and it was a good feeling to know that we can count on her help at any time. We returned home enriched with very pleasant and beautiful experiences. Crete is beautiful and diverse, not only for those who want to sunbathe and swim, but also for hikers (e.g. Samaria Gorge). We would also like to thank you, dear Edit, for all the help, advice and guidance we received from you! I can wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone if they want a calm and stress-free vacation!

We spent a week on this beautiful island. It was one of the best vacations of my life. I booked the accommodation on booking, and the flight with wizzair, both were great. I looked for a rental car on the island and I found Edit's website, where I was very happy because I was able to rent a car for a good price without a credit card. We got a little Kia Pikanto that took us everywhere. We loved it. It was clean and washed. Everything was as we discussed in the correspondence.. A minibus took me from the airport to the car, from where I could go back to the airport for my family. At the end of the holiday, the same. The operator, Gina, was very helpful, flexible and kind both in correspondence and on the phone. Unfortunately, we couldn’t meet face-to-face. I heartily recommend them! Unfortunately, we couldn't meet Edit either, but her website helped a lot at exploring the island! I'm glad that I found it!

We were very satisfied with the organized excursions. Edit was extremely kind and helpful and paid attention to everything. If I had any questions, I received an answer via message almost immediately. Organized by MyCCollage, we also went to Elafonissi, Balos, Knossos Palace and Heraklion. The bus was comfortable and clean, and it picked us up a few minutes from our airbnb accommodation and dropped us off at the end of the tour. We got to many beautiful places this way, and I’d rather choose this than renting a car at any time, as everything was very comfortable so. We learned useful informations during the guided tours, and last but not least, we didn't have to deal with parking and driving, we could just admire the beautiful Crete landscapes from our air-conditioned bus. Thank you very much once again, Edit, for making us an unforgettable vacation.

TOP 3+1 beaches in Crete (West)

You know… In every holiday destinations, there are sights, natural or human-made wonders, which if they were not visited during your holiday it would be like to miss the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Acropolis in Athens, or the Trevi Fountain in Rome.

And if you travel to a big island like Crete, the number of places you put on your „must see” list will undoubtedly multiply, and since we’re talking about a paradise with more than 1000 km of coastline, it’s no surprise that you can’t set a limit to sort the turquoise beaches.

But can be one vacation enough to explore all the bays and all the colorful beaches in Crete, or is it better to make a selection in advance?

If your time is limited, I recommend you to start with Crete’s top-listed beaches and get to those beaches that you might seen in the travel brochure before you chose your holiday to Crete.

Here are 3 + 1 beaches in Crete (West) which you would really regret to miss

To make your life easier, I will also give you a few extra tips how to discover them

1. Elafonisi

The world-famous Elafonisi, which shines sometimes in white and sometimes in pink, is guaranteed to make your eyes sparkle, but in fact, even the journey will be a part of your Cretan adventures.

You can reach the lagoon traveling from northern Crete to the southwestern corner of the island while you’re crossing tiny Greek villages and dancing beside deep gorges.

You’ll walk through the ankle-deep water, and you will find yourself in a nature reserve of the Natura 2000 program, in a small island, which is Elafonisi itself. Check the map here to see where you can find Elafonisi.

2. Balos lagoon

I can only mention Balos and Elafonisi on the same page, and this caribbean paradise is one of the favorites of beach lovers.

In the largest part of the lagoon, you can wander in the ankle-deep sea and if you’re lucky, you can even sink your feet into the pink sand.

Like Elafonisi, Balos is also a nature reserve and that’s the reason why is it waiting for you just with a few parasols and with a small beach bar. The West Cretan wonder is considered one of the top in the world and attracts millions of tourists in each year. Check the map here to see where you can find Balos.

3. Falassarna

Would you like to keep the exotic beaches as your priority, but do you prefer a larger and therefore less crowded beach? Visit Falasarna and enjoy the foam of the azure sea in this spectacular paradise.

Try adrenaline-pumping water sports, or sit down in a family tavern and while you’re enjoying the beauty of the coast, nibble from the tasty Greek dishes.

+1. Seitan Limani

My personal favorite, but once you see this beach, you’ll might have the same oppinion.

Seitan Limani, means Satan’s harbour, may even remind you of the shipwrecked Navaggio Bay of Zakynthos, and although there are no wrecks here, the contrast of the sea breaking its way between the small white pebbles and red rocks forms a bright blue bay that will almost dazzle your eyes.

The beach is small, so it can be crowded on summer days, but the wonderful view and the goats which make sure to not to get bored on the beach will compensate it.

Check the map here to see where you can find Seitan Limani.
